Do This, Not That: Tips for Everyday Care of Dental Implants

One of the coolest things about dental implants is how they’re designed to act just like natural teeth from the root up. The best benefit of this? Easy maintenance. Like natural teeth, implants still need regular care, and the habits you build at home can make a world of difference for their appearance and stability. Here are some simple dos and don’ts to help keep your dental implants in great shape for life.

Do: Brush and Floss Every Day

Treat your implants like real teeth, because they’re functionally the same. Brush twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Make sure to clean gently around your gumline and the implant crown. Then, floss to remove plaque and food between your teeth. This will keep bacteria at bay, protecting your implant from the ill effects of gum disease.

Don’t: Skip Dental Checkups

Even if your implants feel fine, regular dental visits should be part of your routine from now on. While at the dentist, they’ll check your implants, teeth, and surrounding gums to make sure everything is healthy and strong.

Your dentist can easily spot early signs of inflammation or bone loss long before you notice symptoms, as long as you’re keeping up with your bi-annual visits.

Do: Protect Your Dental Implants from Damage

If you grind your teeth or lead an active lifestyle full of sports, it’s a good idea to talk to your dentist about a nightguard or athletic mouthguard. Excess pressure or heavy contact can damage implants and natural teeth alike. By wearing the proper guard, you can help prevent fractures or loosened restorations in the future.

Don’t: Vape or Use Tobacco Products

Smoking and vaping can slow healing and increase the risk of implant failure. Nicotine and other chemicals inside these products affect blood flow in your gums and can contribute to infection and bone loss around your implants. If you indulge in either of these activities and want to quit, don’t hesitate to ask your dentist or doctor about resources that can help!

Do: Stay Aware of Your Implants

Implants rarely have complications, but if you notice pain, swelling, bleeding, bad breath that won’t go away, or a loose-feeling crown, it’s time to call your dentist. These symptoms can be early signs of gum disease or other problems around the implant that can cause failure if left untreated.

With the right habits and a little effort, your dental implants can stay strong, comfortable, and beautiful for decades. If you have questions about your daily routine or need personalized advice, your dental team is always just a phone call away.
